Sustainable Forestry
for Michigan's Future
SFI is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to advancing sustainable forestry in Michigan. We champion responsible forest stewardship and help communities thrive through a strong forest products industry. Our work includes promoting forest certification, training loggers, educating the public, and building partnerships that support both conservation and economic growth.
We collaborate with conservation groups, landowners, professionals, and local communities who share our commitment to healthy forests. Our certification standards protect water quality, biodiversity, wildlife habitat, species at risk, and Forests with Exceptional Conservation Value.
BECOME A qualified LOGGing professional
No link in the wood fiber supply chain has a greater impact on Michigan’s forest management than our professional logging workforce. To ensure sustainable practices, it’s essential that timber harvesters are certified, or actively pursuing certification, to the SFI Standard.
WHEELS TO WOODS PROGRAM
Wheels to Woods is a program that helps schools bring K-12 students into the forest to learn sustainable forestry practices, forest ecology, wood products, and careers in forestry.
Sustainable Forestry Education (SFE)
The Power of Professional Forestry Training
The SFE program empowers SFI-certified wood purchasing companies to clearly demonstrate their commitment to sustainable harvesting and responsible land management. All logging firms working with these certified companies are required to complete SFE training, reinforcing best practices across the supply chain. This program plays a vital role in building public trust, strengthening industry credibility, and ensuring that forest management in Michigan meets the highest standards of sustainability.
report inconsistent Forestry practices
The SFI Implementation Committee’s Inconsistent Practices Program offers a public process for raising concerns about forestry practices that may not align with SFI Standards. By addressing these issues, the program helps ensure sustainable, responsible forest management.
